CUSTODIAN BANK " The bank designated by a mutual fund to act as its custodian. The custodian bank hold the cash and securities of the fund and usually provides clerical functions. It does not perform any management function.

A custodian bank holds securities on behalf of an institutional investors.

The shares, however, rest with the local custodian bank. The GDR which is issued by the ODB may trade freely in the security markets overseas; e.g.

When shares of a mutual fund are held by a custodian bank or when securities are held by a broker in street name , the real owner is the beneficial owner, even though, for safety or convenience, the bank or broker holds title.
