Installment Sales - Real Estate Tax Tips
An installment sale is a sale of property where you receive at least one payment after the tax year of the sale.

Installment Sale:
An installment sale is selling property and receiving the sales price over a series of payments. A down payment is normally made and the balance of the sale is an installment sale. An example would be fifteen (15) years.

Installment Sales Contract
A contract for the sale of property in which the buyer receives possession of the property, but not title to it, upon signing the contract.

Installment Sales
The installment method can be used to defer some tax on capital gains, as long as you receive at least one payment for a piece of property after the year of the sale. It can't be used if the sale results in a loss.
