Maintenance call. A call for more money or securities to be deposited into a brokerage client's margin account.

 


Maintenance call
A call for additional money or securities when a margin account falls below its exchange-mandated required level.
Maintenance fee
A yearly charge to maintain brokerage accounts, such as asset management accounts or IRAs.

Maintenance call: In a margin account, the broker/dealer demand for additional funds to restore the equity to the minimum maintenance level.

A broker's demand on an investor using margin to deposit additional money or securities so that the margin account is brought up to the minimum maintenance margin. This is sometimes called a "fed call" or "maintenance call".

If a margin call cannot be met the brokerage will sell securities held in the account until the margin requirement is met. Failure to meet a margin call can therefore result in a considerable loss. Sometimes referred to as a maintenance call.
