Zero Minus Tick
A securities trade executed on an exchange at the same price as the preceding trade, but at a lower price than the last trade of a different price. For example, if a succession of trades occur in the following order - $10.25, $10.

A downtick is sometimes called a minus tick. The opposite of a downtick is an uptick. A zero downtick is not actually a downtick, but is a trade that occurs at the same price as the prior transaction in the case where that prior trade was a downtick.

This implied that short sales were not permitted on minus ticks or zero-minus ticks, subject to narrow exceptions. The operation of these provisions was commonly described as the 'tick test.
