First observation. Note that we are talking about uncollectibles--not bad debt. I know that the country's budget surplus is dwindling and that State budgets are strained, but as far as I know, neither Medicare nor Medicaid has gone bust.

Lintner's observations
John Lintner's work (1956) suggested that dividend policy is related to a target level of dividends and the speed of adjustment of change in dividends.

The second observation above would not be true for an increase/decrease system. For example, if services are provided to customers for cash, both cash and revenues would increase (a '+/+' outcome).

observe (observation) Watch and test a client action (such as taking inventory).

According to observations made so far in this industry, there are relatively few bonds written for more than $100,000, the amount that indicates a potential requirement for filing a Form 8300.

The empirical observation called Moore's Law predicts that more and more transistors can be packed in microprocessors over time, meaning that computing power can continue to increase while chips continue to shrink in size.

A multitude of observations show that only a very brief life, ranging from a few hours to a few days, is the normal fate of the vast majority of single-celled organisms, ...

where: n = # of observations (usually 36 to 60 months)
x = rate of return for the S&P 500 index
y = rate of return for the security.

Suppose that the observations can be partitioned into equal-sized subgroups according to some second variable.

Markovian Dependence The condition where observations in a time series are dependent on previous observations in the near term. Markovian dependence dies quickly, while long-memory effects like Hurst dependence, decay over very long time periods.

Lag response of prepayments A delay of typically about three months between the time the weighted-average coupon of an MBS pool crosses the threshold for refinancing and observation of an acceleration in prepayment speed is observed.

[Harvey] alpha equation The alpha of a fund is determined as follows: [ (sum of y) -((b)(sum of x)) ] / n ; where: n = number of observations (36 months), b = beta of the fund, x = rate of return for the S&P 500, y = rate of return for the fund.

Observational Noise The error between the true value in a system and its observed value due to imprecision in measurement. Also called Measurement Noise. See: Dynamical Noise.

The random walk hypothesis is more an empirical observation than a theoretical result. Fundamentally, it is an empirical observation that price series are well modeled with a random walk.

Fixed interval averaging of the observations occurs at a predetermined frequency. The averaging process reduces exposure to the volatility of the spot rate so the cost of an Average Rate Option is typically less than a European Style option.

This is a point of observation. You too should move to a point of observation and look for oncoming and looming dangers. You should be on the lookout for consumer confidence. This is a statistic that is often polled.

Austrian economists reject observation as a tool applicable to economics, saying that while it is appropriate in the natural sciences where factors can be isolated in laboratory conditions, acting human beings are too complex for this treatment.

The tendency for subsequent observations of a random variable to be closer to its mean than the current observation.
