Primary research - The collection and collation of original data via direct contact with potential or existing customers. Also called field research.
Primary sector - Industry which extracts the natural resources of the earth.

Primary research is often expensive to prepare, collect and interpret from data to information.

Both exploratory and conclusive research exemplify primary research. A company collects primary research for its own purposes. This contrasts with secondary research: research published previously and usually by someone else.
