SERIAL BONDS A type of bond usually issued by a municipality with varying maturity dates. The maturity dates are scheduled to mature at regular intervals until all bonds in the series are retired.

Sinking fund and serial bonds are not types of bonds, just methods of retiring them. The sinking fund method, in which money is set aside each year to retire debt, is most commonly used for corporate debt.

Balloon Interest - An increased coupon rate on the longer term maturity instruments within a serial bond issue. In a serial issue, bonds mature at different intervals, creating a string of short- to long-term instruments.
