SERIAL BONDS A type of bond usually issued by a municipality with varying maturity dates. The maturity dates are scheduled to mature at regular intervals until all bonds in the series are retired.
Sinking fund and serial bonds are not types of bonds, just methods of retiring them. The sinking fund method, in which money is set aside each year to retire debt, is most commonly used for corporate debt.
Average Life
The average length of time an issue of serial bonds and/or term bonds with mandatory sinking funds and/or estimated prepayments is expected to be outstanding. It also can be the average maturity of a bond portfolio.
