Tape - Slang term for any device displaying current or recent market trading data. The term originates from antique ticker tape machines that printed out long, continuous strips of paper reporting stock trades.
While the stock markets are in session, there is a running record of trading activity in each individual stock. Today's computerized system, still referred to as the ticker or ticker tape, actually replaces the scrolling paper tape of the past.
This type of trade is permissible provided it is done in accordance with the rules and regulations of the particular exchange and other regulatory organizations. The letter X can indicate this type of transaction on a ticker tape.
