Launched in 1973, a year ahead of the Golf, the original Passat was little more than a re-worked Audi 80, using a body styled by Giugiaro. But clearly it hit the spot, and more than 2.

The original RS2 took an Audi 80 Avant, was re-engineered by Porsche and was unique. The first RS4 was unique in being the only bi-turbo V6, then the first RS6 was the only bi turbo V8 Avant.

The diesel saloon even won a CAR magazine 'giant test' against the CitroÃ"n BX (1.7 XUDT), the then new Peugeot 405 (1.7 XUDT) and Audi 80 (1.6) turbo diesels.

A new cabriolet version of the A4 was introduced in 2002 to replace the ageing Audi 80-based model. It incorporated some minor styling changes which eventually found their way to the sedan version (such as body-colored lower bumper and sill panels).

But the RS6 was actually the third Audi RS, following the 1994-95 RS2 (based on the Audi 80 wagon) and the 2000-01 RS4, a 375-hp, twin-turbocharged screamer fashioned from the first-generation Audi A4 Avant.

Iltis experience led Audi engineers (notably Ferdinand Piëch, now Volkswagen chairman) to investigate the benefits of four-wheel drive in a high-performance road car, starting with an old-shape Audi 80.
