The 2004 Audi A8 L quattro:
"L" stand for Long, as in wheelbase. A longer wheelbase means smoother cruising on uneven surfaces and for tall folks in the cushy backseat it means cross-legged riding comfort. The L is the only A8 to come to the US.

The Audi A8 is the only other aluminum-space-frame luxury sedan, though Audi's particular construction techniques and standard all-wheel drive makes it much heavier.

The Audi A8 (as well as the automatic version of the Audi V8) also used a computer-controlled clutch to lock the centre differential, in a manner similar to the systems just described.

The 2011 Audi A8 goes on sale in the U.S. by the end of the year, but the Google Earth navigation system won't be available until early 2011.

In 1998, Audi introduced the S8, a high-performance version of the Audi A8 in the vein of Mercedes-Benz AMG models.

Distinct sports appeal and supreme comfort - these are the two defining characteristics of the Audi A8. At the time of its market launch three years ago, this large saloon shot straight to the top of the luxury segment thanks to its dynamic qualities.

The XJ8L starts at $64,995, some six grand less than the comparable Audi A8 and the XJ8 stickers for $62,495, nearly five grand less than the Audi A8. Again, the rival BMW and Mercedes sedans cost more than the Audis.

Lurking under the thrusting nose of the Continental GT is a heavily reworked version of the W12 engine, which also powers the top-range Audi A8s and the flagship model in the VeeDub Phaeton range.

Travel to any European city and you'll see four-cylinder and six-cylinder BMW 7 Series, Audi A8s and Mercedes-Benz S-Classes. North Americans (generally) won't abide 'fours' at all, and any 'sixes' are usually paired with batteries or turbos.
