The American Austin was a United States version of the Austin Seven automobile manufactured by the American Austin Car Company from 1930 to 1937.
The company was born as a custom body builder on mundane Austin Seven chassis. After World War II, it introduced the XK120 sports car with an all-new XK double overhead cam inline six cylinder engine.
In 1959 The Motor tested an Austin Seven 850 de luxe with a top speed of 72.4mph, 0-60mph in 27.1 sec and 40.2mpg. "This compact car offers a remarkable combination of speed with economy, roominess and comfort," it said.
A direct descendent of the original Bantam Jeep (not Willys Jeep, as some would claim), which was developed from an Austin Seven, the latest Wrangler has for the first time in its civilian history acquired an oil-burner.
