Save for the year that I took a V-12-powered BMW 7-series, this year's mount, the long-term X5, was the finest road companion yet.
Compared to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Lexus LS 430, the Infiniti Q45, or even the Bentley Arnage, the BMW 7-Series will always be the sportiest driver of the group.
These English-made cars are now targeting the same client base as the Mercedes S-class and the BMW 7-series.
While the backseat is not as limousine-like as a BMW 7-series "L" car or the Audi A8L, it will comfortably accommodate two 6-footer rear seat passengers. I've had three adults in the rear seat for a short in-town drive with no complaints.

There's no doubting that the Phaeton is an astonishing car, the result of Volkswagen's decision to attempt to create a rival to the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes S-Class and even the Audi A8, which shares many of its mechanical components with the Phaeton.
Bentley has found a sweet spot in the marketplace, priced just out of reach of commoners who can only afford a BMW 7-Series and comfortably below the outrageously expensive Maybach and Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Shown above is a smaller, more affordable member of the Roller family based on the next BMW 7-series. The $250,000 sedan will use a modified and possibly twin-turbocharged version of the 6.0-liter BMW V-12 rated at nearly 550 hp.

Recommended. Big and comfortable, Audi has taken the top spot over the Mercedes S-Class and the BMW 7-series. It's just a shame it doesn't look as good as it is to live with.
