The bell has rung, and in a points decision, BMW's X5 4.4i is the victor. It's nice to know the allroad quattro 4.2 hasn't been knocked out by its lairier opponent, and indeed it does some things better than the X5.

The BMW X5 is just three years old, still has a waiting list of buyers in many of its most important markets, and on the face of it there was no reason to muck around with such a successful car so soon.

BMW X5 is fast, comfortable, and prestigious. It delivers superb handling and excellent performance. X5s straight-line and freeway manners are great. It feels stable, the steering is precise, and the ride is smooth.

BMW X5:
BMW cabins are known for being governed by an air of almost spartan restraint. Not so with the X5's. There's no skimping on the poplar, and the leather is so creamy, it could raise your cholesterol.

The BMW X5 is a 4×4 hero especially brilliant at urban terrain, and that calls for different accessories from a conventional off-road-vehicle.

The BMW X5 is also good off-road as well as on, plus the luxurious interior and wide range of high-tech options make for a compelling package, but like the Cayenne, the price can quickly get out of control.
