The Dardo, based on the Fiat X1/9, had a mid-mounted engine made by Fiat - the Dardo F 1.3 had a 1.3 litre engine, Dardo F 1.5 had a 1.5 litre engine. Fuel consumption was too high (12 -13 litre/100 km).
But the use of so-called alpha-numerics does not always spell disaster, especially in the motor trade - just think of the Citroen DS 21, the Fiat X-19 and the Mazda MX-5.
Bertone could now style, prototype and manufacture cars in volume, and this business model inspired the whole coachbuilding industry. Bertone later built the Fiat 850 Spider and Fiat X1/9 in volume, and many other cars in lesser numbers.
