I think the one in my 1989 Ford Tempo worked better (eww)." This doesn't seem to be an isolated problem, either, as we've seen owner complaints about the defogger on the Mazda 6 owner forums of various Web sites.
The now departed "all wheel drive" Ford Tempo and Subaru Justy were really part time manually engaging systems, like the older Subaru GLs. The term on demand four wheel drive is quite ambiguous.
Ford's first AWD sedan was the Ford Tempo, from 1987 to 1991, but was not sold in a wagon or SUV-like version. Currently, the Ford Taurus, Taurus X, Edge, Escape, and Fusion are all car-based vehicles available from Ford with AWD.
the VW Beetle prompted American management to invest in what would become the Mark III European Escort introduced in 1980, and the first generation North American Escort, introduced in 1981. That car would also be the basis for the larger Ford Tempo.
