Holden’s South Korean-made Epica has not been the success story the company was hoping for. However, nothing daunted, Holden is hitting back with an upgraded model range featuring an optional new diesel engine.

Holden doesn't have too many showroom problems these days - except for its inability to sell SUVs. Half a dozen years ago after Holden ditched the Jackaroo, there wasn't much on offer this side of the microscopic Cruz.

Today's shocking bit of news comes from a Motor Trend article on the future of Cadillac.

From the front, the Holden Maloo looks about as exciting as a Hertz mid-size rental. The pickup's low stance and tarmac sniffing front spoiler can't disguise its humble origins as a volume GM product.

Pontiac's well-received G8, for instance, actually hails from Australia as the Holden Commodore. The 2009 Pontiac G5 was also subjected to this process. But in the G5's case, the re-gifting process is about as successful as last year's fruitcake.

GM's Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant will build it for North America, while Holden will build it in Australia for that market. So GM has gained a lot of real-world experience with this compact that North Americans will benefit from.

The model was not present until December 2005, when it was introduced as the new TK Holden Barina (3-door and 5-door), replacing previous XC Barina, which was an imported and rebadged European Opel Corsa.

As a result, the changes are minimal, making this to all intents and purposes a rebadged Holden.

It will eventually be sold around the world in Saturn, Opel, Chevrolet, Holden and Daewoo brands. About the only things left over from the old plastic-sided Vue are a couple of its powertrains.

At first we got no calls at all but then we got a few nibbles. One caller was a scrap metal dealer who often traveled to Australia and knew the G8 as the Holden Commadore.

At launch in Ireland, there are 1.6- and 1.8-litre engines, substantially improved versions respectively of the GM 'Family One' and 'Family Two' power units. The smaller one is built by Daewoo themselves, the 1.8-litre by GM Holden in Australia.

Made by Holden it was a great niche car that very few people bought. But HALO cars don't make money. No money to be made there at all.
