The Lada's design IS basic, but if its mechanical simplicity means it is cheap and won't easily break off-road, I would seriously consder a new or nearly new one of these instead of a 10-previous-owner Defender.

A Lada would see it off. Fuel consumption poor, I’ve never yet achieved 30mpg. I’ve had to convert to LPG to be able to afford to run it. If this is the best America can produce then my advice to them is not to bother.
good until they made a loeb edition of it with those stupid vinyls on the inside and the what is the point of making a loeb edition if it isnt quicker and better to drive than the normal one its basically like putting spoiler and decals to a lada ...
In a world full of extremely competent Skodas, Hyundais and Kias, there is really no need to choose something that feels like a latter-day Lada.
