When the rather ungainly estate-cum-SUV Lagonda concept was unveiled at Geneva last year, it received a decidedly cool reception. Aston has promised another interpretation this year, to appeal to ultra-wealthy luxury car buyers.
By 1979, the Lagonda was finally in production after problems with its futuristic electronic instrumentation, and there was time to restart a project which had first been mooted in 1976 - a Towns-designed gullwing supercar.
Oh, there have been four-door Aston Martins before, but those Lagonda models were so bizarre, so atypical of the brand and ultimately so unpopular that you'd be just as likely to see Sasquatch cruising along on the freeway in a Smart Fortwo.

The plushbottoms who people this office are willing to excuse almost anything in its name, which explains our fondness for the 1983 Aston Martin Lagonda.
Billed as Aston Martin's first four-door, four-seat sports car, the Rapide needs some context. The 1941 Aston Martin Atom had four doors and four seats, as did the 1976 Lagonda and the 1994 Lagonda Virage.
Also designed by Frua, the 1963 'Tipo 107' Quattroporte (Italian for 'four doors') joined two other notable grand tourers, the Facel Vega and the Lagonda Rapide, which could comfortably do 200 km/h on the new motorways of Europe.
Aston Martin doesn't do saloons - or at least, it didn't. There was the Atom prototype in the 1930s, but it never saw the light of day. Since then, the only four-door cars the company has produced have been badged as Lagondas.
names now also gone should be mentioned: Willys, Hupmobile, Hudson, Packard. And then the ones that evoke a motor sporting and touring nostalgia in the grand manner - Alvis, Armstrong Siddley, Delage, Frazer Nash, Studebaker, Stutz and Lagonda.
