The Tribute made its debut at the 2000 Los Angeles Auto Show. In the United States, it filled the gap left by the Mazda Navajo (which was retired in 1994), while in most other countries it was the first Mazda-badged SUV ever sold.

Because of the 4WD option, the Mazda Navajo (sold from 1991-1994) version of the Ford Explorer was only offered as a 2 door. The middle row was available as a bench, allowing seating for 8 when most minivans seated 7.
