There's no doubting that the Phaeton is an astonishing car, the result of Volkswagen's decision to attempt to create a rival to the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes S-Class and even the Audi A8, which shares many of its mechanical components with the Phaeton.

Even Audi would probably agree than when well-heeled buyers think of big, prestigious, German sedans, it's the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series that usually spring to mind first.

When it comes to high-end sedans, the A8 is saddled with none of the BMW 7 Series' controversial styling cues or the Mercedes S-Class' questionable interior materials.

Your wife couldn't possibly complain -- you can fit several aisles of Morrisons in the boot of a Mercedes S-class. And I know for a fact that most kids were rather turn up to school in leather stitched Bentley hide than itchy Toyota Picnic Draylon.

If you spend most of your life being chauffeured, you'll prefer a Mercedes S-Class. But, if you enjoy driving, no other rival will reward you like an XJ.

With this new, larger, more self-confident A8 I would say Audi now tops the charts of the German luxury sedans. Yes. I would choose it over the Mercedes S-Class or the BMW 7 Series.

Folks - thanks for the comments about the interior colors and their tendency to demonstrate wear and stuff on 'em. Mebbe my next car should be a black on black Mercedes S-class, although then the EXTERIOR would be a bear to keep clean.

The 57S is better to drive than the standard Maybach 57 or 62 or the Rolls, but the Audi A8 and the Mercedes S-class are more entertaining.

We thought the Mercedes S-Class set new parameters for the top bracket. As it certainly did. The BMW 7-series has bounced back to set new benchmarks in areas we hadn't thought possible. Full Story.
