Mercury Sable, and its twin, the Ford Taurus, are premier domestic sedans. They are roomy, powerful and dependable. (There has been a complete redesign for 2000.) RD's Sable has generally performed up to expectations.

The Montego was originally launched as a replacement for the Mercury Sable and shares its basic body structure and powertrain with the Ford Five Hundred and previous generation Volvo S80.

I learned to drive on the interstate at age 14 in a first generation Mercury Sable. It belonged to my grandparents, and it was the three of us on a trip from Louisiana to Florida.

The Mercury Sable achieves higher safety scores, boasts a more upscale feel, and won't cost buyers much more than the Impala.

Although it seems hard to believe, given the recent collapse of the US auto industry, in 1994 the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable reigned supreme, proving that America could beat the foreign competition and build a top-rated, best-selling family sedan.
