With its combination of decent road manners and genuine go-anywhere ability, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a worthy addition to the increasingly short list of 'proper' SUVs.
Overland models use Jeeps Quadra-Drive, optional on Limited ($550). Quadra-Drive combines the Quadra-Trac II transfer case with Vari-Lock axles, which use hydromechanical torque-transfer couplings between the wheels.
Overland 4WD ($43,975) comes with Quadra-Drive II.
Other Commander options include rear-seat DVD player and engine block heater. An Off-Road Group for 4WD models adds skid plates and tow hooks.
New Overland packs the HEMI V8 MDS engine combined with Quadra Drive II, Jeep's ultimate 4WD system. Soft leathers and real wood trim the cabin, while the exterior flashes unique platinum accents on grille, side moldings and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland model combines the 4.7-liter high output engine with a high level of standard equipment and premium appointments, making it the most powerful and luxurious Grand Cherokee yet.

For me at least the two to beat are the Touareg and the Grand Cherokee, either Limited or Overland. If I was going top-end and a highway ripper only it would be the Cayenne hands down; if the badge wasn't a criterion it would be the SRT GC.

7-litre Hemi V8 ($60,000 Limited and $69,500 Overland range-topper) is the better powerplant choice for now, since it provides the necessary mid-range oomph to safely overtake and such. It also sounds much better.
