For far too long, Dodge was sidelined as Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro/Pontiac Firebird muscle car classics cruised the mean streets of Motown, Cali's coastal highways and other fabled street legal venues.

Since General Motors pulled the plug on the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, the Mustang is the only game in town for those who want a sporty, reasonably priced yet powerful, rear-drive four-seat coupe or convertible.

The second generation Mustang, made from 1967 to 1968, had competition from the Chevrolet Camaro, the Pontiac Firebird and the Plymouth Barracuda. Ford's response was to make a larger Mustang, though the wheel base was still 108 inches.
