The old Suzuki Wagon R and Vauxhall Agila were archetypal old people's cars. They had upright seats and were easy to get in and out of, but looked like shoeboxes on wheels. Consequently, very few people who weren't getting on a bit bought them.

The Agila is a rebadged version of the Suzuki Wagon R+, which in turn grew out of Japan's peculiar tax system that encourages the short, tall design that the baby Vauxhall so proudly sports. All of which makes it fairly unsuited for life in Britain.

To my untutored eye, Mazda's Demio, the Suzuki Wagon R and a fleet of similar oddly styled, functional cars which never made it out of Japan's home market, pioneered this particular niche.

In place of the re-badged Suzuki Wagon R comes a slick little city car. The sales brochure is festooned with bright, slim, café-bar types - there's not a size 22 frock in sight, nor a bowls club, nor the sea-front at Worthing.
