This huge Japanese carmaker hadn't been in Mexico until 2001, with the Camry and Corolla. The maker was known in the country for the illegal pick-ups and cars from the United States.
Toyota resurrected the MR2 nameplate in 2000 with the introduction of the Miata-fighting Spyder. The MR2 isn't as practical for weekend getaways as the Miata, given its lack of a real trunk.
