Twenty years ago Suzuki was top dog in the affordable 4x4 market - long before the Toyota RAV4 or Land Rover Freelander were even conceived. Now you need four-wheel drive just to haul yourself out of a marketplace swamped with rivals.
Subaru's Forester and the Toyota RAV4 are the best handlers in this class. The X-Trail feels quite nose heavy and, from the driver's seat, bigger and bulkier than its rivals. However in day to day driving it's fine.
