Although they claim the latest generation Opel/Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf have much improved handling over their respective predecessors, they still were short of the all-round ability offered by the Mk 1 Focus.
It's true that some diesels hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion can achieve similarly spectacular fuel consumption and should certainly be considered as a frugal alternative.
But soon there could be a solution to make both camps happy -- the 2012 Volkswagen Golf R. A meaner, more powerful version of the GTI, this R32 successor could be the car that turns the GTI haters' frowns upside down.
We tried the higher power version, which puts the Alfa deep into Volkswagen Golf GTD territory, and on price and performance also matches the most powerful diesel Audi A3 Sportback, and the ultra-efficient Vauxhall Astra 2.0 CDTi Ecoflex.
