The history of the Abyssinian cat is a little obscure, although it is fairly certain that the wife of an English Army officer, a Mrs Captain Barrett-Leonard, brought the original specimen back to Britain from Abyssinia in 1868.

This coat pattern is also found on the Abyssinian cat as well as rabbits, squirrels, gophers and other animals in the wild throughout the world. Ticking refers to the presence of bands of different color on the hair shaft.

This shorthaired cat possesses many of the same attributes of the standard Abyssinian cat. Yet it differs in the following ways; it is generally larger in body than the average Abyssinian. Weighing any where from 9 to 17 pounds (4-7.5kg).

The Bengal Longhair arose due to recessive genes from foundation Abyssinian cats. It has a fluffier coat than the Bengal and a plumy tail and distinct ruff.
