Third stage labor follows immediately and is seen simply as the passage of the membranes, complete with the greenish black mass of separated placenta (the afterbirth).

The queen usually eats the nutritious remains of the placenta known as the afterbirth. If there are many kittens the queen may not want to eat all the afterbirths and when you see she has no more interest in those that remain, remove them.

You should visit your vet with the mother and litter the day after the whelping for a post-natal oxytocin injection to ensure removal of the afterbirth and to enhance milk flow.
