American Curl history began on a sunny day in June 1981 in Lakewood, California. A longhair silky black female kitten with unusual ears wandered up to the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga.

The American Curl Cat is a very recent breed, the discovery of the first cat dating back to June, 1981, in Lakewood, California. The most unique attribute of this breed is its distinctly curled ears.

The American Curl has very unique ears which actually curl or fold back away from the face of the cat. This of course is where the American Curl gets its name from.

The American Curl reaches full maturity around two or three years of age. The cartilage in the ears begins to curl and harden four days after birth, but the definitive curl is not set until three or four months of age.

The American Curl is well regarded for its health, hardiness and adaptability. With no known genetic defects or predispositions to physical ailments, it rarely gets ill. Kittens also have a strong immune system and respond well to immunization shots.

The American Curl is recognised by TICA, CFA, AACE and AFCA (see breed standards).

The American Curl is recognized by its unusual ears, which are curled backwards. This is the result of a natural mutation. There are both longhair and shorthair varieties, and a rainbow of patterns and colors.

The American Curl is a relatively new breed. The breed name is due to the characteristic of their ears curling backwards. The curl results from a genetic mutation, not a curling iron. The American Curl comes in both long and short hair versions.

Like the American Curl breed, the Wirehair started as a spontaneous mutation in the domestic cat population. In 1966 breeder Joan O'Shea acquired from a small farm in upstate New York a kitten that was "just a hair different.

One cat which was considered an appropriate match for outcrossing with the LaPerm is the straight eared American Curl Variant.
