The American Ringtail is a new and unique breed of cat. Founded in 1998 in the San Francisco Bay Area after a cat rescuer Susan Manley hand raised a kitten that turned out to be unusual.

The American Ringtail also put their tail to more use than other cats.
There are numerous types of curly-tailed cats whose tails loop over the back or form tight corkscrews. One such mutation has been developed into the American Ringtail [1], [2] but others have been regarded as curiosities and not perpetuated.
