ASH: American Shorthair, a breed.

By 1966 the Rosses had begun to register their cats with the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy in Britain as AOV's (Any Other Variety) and at that stage the Ross's were still referring to their cats as "Lop-ears", after the lop-eared rabbits, ...

Finally, after the Balinese was shown at the Empire Cat Show in New York in 1961, under the Any Other Variety (AOV) heading, the breed began to gain acceptance and was allowed championship status by most American cat associations.

Any Other Variety (AOV) - A registered cat which does not conform to the breed's standard i.e. the colour of the cat is not accepted in the breed standard.

In addition to the colors accepted for competition, in CFA, a pointed cat from at least one Oriental Shorthair parent is considered an AOV (Any Other Variety). In TICA, these cats are considered Siamese and can compete as Siamese.

All other tail lengths are eligible for the AOV (any other variety) Class. Many of today's top breeding females are those that had a long tail when born. Numerous Grand Champions have come from a tailed cat, either male or female.

Though in CFA, pointed cats from Oriental Shorthair parents are considered AOV (Any Other Variety), in TICA, as well as in the majority of worldwide Cat Associations, these cats are considered to be, and compete as, Siamese.

Longies are not permitted in the Manx show ring but, like the Stumpies, can be shown in AOV (which stands for Any Other Variety) classes. Longies are extremely valuable contributors to Manx breeding programs.
