Bengal cats can take a great deal of interest in running water and often don't mind getting wet. Most Bengal owners have stories about their cat's affection for running water or even jumping in a sink or tub.

Bengal cats are the result of the cross between a leopard cat (Asian Leopard Cat, ALC) and a domestic cat, usually Egyptian Mau or domestic shorthair, and generations of their offspring.

Bengal cats originated by breeding a domestic cat to an Asian wild cat, then developed by outcrossing with several other breeds. The amount of "wild" genes is now said to be about 10%.

The Bengal stands out among cats for its lush, dense, and remarkably soft coat. The distinctive leopard-like spots on the Bengal can be random, aligned horizontally with rosettes that form a half circle, or in a marbled pattern.

The Bengal Cat originated from a mix of breeds such as the Abyssinian, American Shorthair, Burmese, Egyptian Mau and the Asian Leopard Cat.

Head: Rather large with rounded contours. Slightly longer than wide. Gently curves from forehead to bridge. High, prominent cheekbones. Full, broad muzzle.

The Toyger is descended from Bengal cat stock crossed with domestic cats. The aim of this cross was to produce a striped 'toy tiger'. It was recognised for 'Registration only' by The International Cat Association in the early 1990s.

The coat,which is one of the most distinguishing features of the Bengal cat, should be short and dense, displaying clarity and extreme contrast, with either a spotted or marbled pattern that is often rosetted and has a distinctive silky soft feel.

The conformation gives the Bengal cat a basic "feral" appearance. It is medium to large, sleek, and very muscular with hind-quarters slightly higher than shoulders.

Unlike other spotted cats such as the Ocicat or Bengal cat, the Egyptian Mau is a natural breed. The correct Egyptian Mau should look evenly balanced with an overall medium size.

After years of frustration and excitement the Bengal cat as we know it today emerged.
