Bobtails are slow to develop, reaching maturity somewhere between two and three years. Like bobcats, the Bobtail's hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs, and the feet are large and round and may have toe tufts.

Bobtails enjoy roughhousing and are especially fond of retrieving and playing fetch. They are also known to enjoy perching on their owner's shoulders, catching a free ride around the house.

The Bobtail is a medium sized cat, well muscled but slender in build. The legs are long and elegant but not fragile in appearance, and the hind legs are noticeably longer than the forelegs which give the bobtail a unique gait.

The Bobtail's tail is unusually short, being about one third to half the length of a normal tail (see Helmi's photographs). The tail is usually one to 4 inches in length.

The Bobtail comes in both long and short coat lengths and wide variety of colors and patterns. The traditional color is the tri-colored mi-ke (mee-kay) that combines rich red, deep black and pristine white in a package that is considered good luck.

No two Bobtails have the same tail. Most average from one to four inches, but many are longer or shorter.

Japanese Bobtails are strong and healthy cats. They usually have litters of three to four kittens that are extremely large for newborns. Compared to other breeds, they are active earlier, walk earlier and start getting into trouble earlier.

Japanese Bobtails are active, intelligent, talkative cats. Many describe the Japanese Bobtails as "singing" cats because they tend to chirrup melodiously even entering into entire conversations with their humans.

Japanese Bobtail cats are a well-known and respected cat breed in Japan. When possessing the favored Mi-Ke cat color pattern, the traditional three colors of black, red, and white, they are known as a Japanese symbol of good luck and happiness.

Japanese Bobtails are widely considered active and intelligent. They also actively seek out the company of human beings. Fun fact: they tend to like to carry things in their mouths.

American Bobtails are quite playful and can be taught dog-like activities and games like playing fetch, hide-and-seek and going for a walk on a lead.

Since the Bobtail was a common street cat for so long, it is likely that somewhere along the bloodline they acquired the recessive gene for long hair.

The American Bobtail is a completely domestic cat that should look wild as it visually resembles a wild Bobtailed cat. The rounding of the brow, combined with an almost almond eye shape, combine to create a wild hunting look.

The American Bobtails most distinctive feature is its small tail in comparison to many other breeds of cats. They tend to be short and stalky in appearance and their coat of fur almost resembles shag carpet in texture and feel.

The earliest Bobtail breeder was Mindy Cave, a friend of the Sanders. Early in the 1970's the breed experienced set backs caused by the cat associations Ms. Cave had approached for acceptance. TCA, INC. has no such blockading policies.

The Japanese bobtail is a shorthaired, medium sized cat with a well muscled, rather slender foreign type build. The unique set of eyes combined with high cheekbones and long nose lends to a Japanese appearance.
