Burmese cat
The ideal Burmese is a small to medium sized cat with a muscular frame, heavier than it looks, and a straight back. The Burmese is not as long and slender as the Siamese, nor as heavily boned as the British Shorthair.

Burmese cats originate from Burma, Thailand and Malaya and the Burmese cat of today was developed from a single cat named Wong Mau that was brought from the Orient by a sailor and given to Dr Joseph Thompson of San Francisco in 1930.

Since Burmese cats, originally called "Copper cats" in their native land of Southeast Asia, existed in the same general regions as the Siamese for centuries, unplanned or intentional outcrossings seem likely.

It is separate from the Burmese cat. Its body is pale with deep blue eyes. They sport little white boots which are actually their white paws. The Birman cat is supposedly originated from Burma. Birmans are bred for companionship with humans.

She established a breeding programme, which was based on crossing a solid black American Shorthair cat (the gene of the black coat is dominant) with a sable Burmese cat (to retain the body type and the tight close lying coat).

Soon hybrid Burmese cats were deceptively sold as purebreds. Protests poured in and the CFA withdrew its recognition. Burmese breeders who had faith in the breed continued their work despite the gloomy scenario.

Burmese cats were never used in their breeding program. Research has revealed that English breeders had crossed Foreign Longhairs (Angoras), Abyssinians and Havana Browns in an attempt to recreate an Angora type cat.

Said to be native to Singapore but controversial as the originator took her Burmese cats to Singapore (possibly also some Abyssinian heritage).

Malayan
The name "Malayan" is sometimes used to describe Burmese cats of colors other than solid sable.

It is believed the breed was created in the early 1960's. A white Persian-Angora named Josephine was out crossed to Birman and Burmese cats. Kittens from these breedings were carefully line-bred to give us these large beautiful Ragdolls.

Burmese cats have a passion for literature, and can be found sitting on top of the newspaper or on you chest as you sit down to enjoy some reading of your own.

For example, a purebred Bombay may also have Burmese cats in its background.
