Cataracts in Cats
Cataracts in cats can strike a feline at any age. As a pet owner you need to be aware of the signs of cataracts in cats to help your animal overcome this condition with timely medical help.

Cataracts refers to "any opacity on the lens that interferes with the transmission of light to the retina"1. They are rare in cats. They are mostly caused by injury and infections. They can be inherited.

Vision does not appear to be affected. This is NOT the same as cataracts. Cataracts are white and opaque. Vision can be affected by cataracts, and your vet needs to be consulted (see "when is it time to see the vet?" below).

Lens of the eye becomes displaced out of its normal position; may be hereditary, congenital, due to trauma, or secondary to cataracts, uvetitis or glaucoma
Abnormal appearance to the iris; may be able to see displaced lens
Ophthalmic exam ...

If you shine a bright light in the eyes of an older cat, you may see a blue-white sheen. These are senile cataracts and do not interfere with vision. Brown tearing around the eye could mean blocked tear ducts.
