Chinchillas are a silver or golden coloured variety of Persian cat. The coat colour is shaded. For example, with the silver variety, the fur is pure white underneath with black tips scattered evenly throughout the coat.
Chinchilla (shell) is the lightest tipping; hair tip is coloured and hair shaft is silver, giving a sparkling appearance. Shaded is next degree; colour extends further along the hair shaft, darkest on the back to create a mantle of shading.

The Chinchilla Longhair, also known as Chinchilla Persian, is the oldest man-made breed of cat. There is a strong controversy as to whether the Chinchilla Longhair is a variety of the Persian breed or not.
"Tipping" (Chinchilla appearance) means the least amount of color on the tip of the hair. "Shaded" means more color than tipping (the color extending about half way down the hair) and "smoke" means more color than either tipped or shaded.
Smokes and Chinchillas. This is the combination of the expression of the silver gene (a dominant), and the gene for solid color (a recessive). Other modifiers account for whether the cat is a referred to as a smoke, a shaded, or a chinchilla.
Due to having Chinchilla in their lines, Burmillas can carry the longhaired gene. This means that it is possible for longhaired kittens to be born to shorthaired parents. Longhaired Burmillas are their own breed.

True to its name, the Burmilla cat breed is a cross between the Burmese and the Chinchilla Persian cat breeds.
The tale goes that the male Silver Chinchilla, called Sanquist, and a female Burmese, called Faberge, were awaiting their mates. They became interested in each other. During the breeding season Sanquist mated with Faberge.
In producing Burmillas, it was not the intention to develop a Silver coloured Burmese, (Silver Asian), which was achieved independently in New Zealand without crossing to Chinchilla.
