Dermatitis in Cats: An Overview
Dermatitis is defined as any inflammation of the skin. It can manifest in a number of ways and is one of the most frustrating conditions for owners of companion cats.

Lick Dermatitis
Cats lick to keep themselves clean, to rid themselves of varmints like fleas, to cool themselves, to absorb Vitamin D, and to release stress.

Allergic dermatitis requires multiple exposures to the molecule before it develops. It rarely occurs in animals less than two years old. Irritant contact dermatitis often occurs in inquisitive young animals who get into things they should not.

Miliary Dermatitis - an allergic skin reaction caused by: flea bites (most common reason), mite bites and lice bites. It can also be caused by skin infections (bacterial and fungal) and drug reactions.

Malassezia dermatitis (MD) is a yeast infection of the skin caused by the organism Malassezia pachydermatis. Malassezia pachydermatis is a yeast organism that normally lives in small numbers in the ears and on the skin.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Breeding towards proper head structure is necessary to prevent kinking of the tear ducts, resulting in tear run down the front of the face, or muzzle creases that can result in dermatitis on the face.

If your pet is suffering from a contact dermatitis from plants you will notice reddening of the body on the underline - the tummy, chest, groins and paws. This reddening is usually accompanied by continual scratching and discomfort.

Signs of contact allergens: dermatitis, pigmentary changes or skin eruptions. Most noticable on the chin, ears, inner thighs, abdomen, underside of the tail, armpits and around the anus.

The most common allergy dermatitis in cats and dogs is a flea allergy. Fleas also spread tapeworm from one animal to another.
