Domestic shorthaired cats are characterised by a wide range of colouring and typically 'revert to type' after a few generations, this means they express their coats as a . This can be any colour or combination of colours.

Commonly called DSH - these domestic cats arrived in North America with the first settlers.

Domestic shorthairs and longhairs are easy to acquire. In fact, many cats and kittens are killed at animal shelters because there are more cats than there is demand.

The domestic shorthair gradually populated the entire continent, in both domestic and feral environments.

The domestic shorthaired, in other words, the alley cat; the mixed shorthaired or longhair breeds are usually free. These cats are not of show quality but they are every bit as adventurous and loving.

The Domestic shorthaired cat is not pedigreed; rather it is a fancy cat name to describe a shorthaired cat. They have a wide range in coloring and are similar to a Tabby's coat.

White domestic shorthair in Ontario Canada gives birth to a hairless cat amongst "normal" kittens. He is called Prune, bred back to his mother to produce more hairless cats and the breed started.

Head: Broad and rounded; medium in size. Moderately convex rise from the bridge of the nose to the forehead. Definite jowls in mature males.

The American Shorthair Cat, which was called the Domestic Shorthair until 1960’s, originated from the European Shorthair cat. Its ancestors were probably cats brought into North America by the first settlers.

The breed was originally called the "Shorthair", then "Domestic Shorthair", and later, in 1965, the "American Shorthair".

With only one exception, the parents of hairless cats were Domestic Shorthairs with no particular bloodlines predominating. Of interest though were the Paris cats, who had turned up from time to time in litters born to a certain pair of Siamese cats.

Originally known as the Domestic Shorthair, the breed was renamed "American Shorthair" in 1966 to better represent its "All American" character and to differentiate it from any other shorthaired breed.

Originating in the United States, the American Shorthair was once called the Domestic Shorthair. The ancestors of today's American Shorthair arrived in North America with early European pioneers. They worked on ships catching mice and rats.

The Spotted Mist proudly wears the label 'Made In Australia' and has evolved from combining Burmese, Abyssinian and Australian Domestic shorthair cats.

General: The Snowshoe is a medium cat that combines the heftiness of its domestic shorthair ancestors with the length of its oriental ancestors. It is a well balanced cat overall, firm and muscular.

Non-pedigreed shorthaired cats in the United States are most commonly called Domestic Shorthairs to differentiate them from their purebred relatives. Calico (orange, black and white) and tortoiseshell (black and orange) cats are almost always female.

In early cat exhibitions in the 1900 the shorthair cats then known as Domestic Shorthairs were represented. As more shorthair breeds were imported, dedicated breeders of the domestics began selective breeding to develop a cat of specific type.

In the first crossings of leopard cat to Domestic Shorthair, the male kittens were infertile, as is the case with many hybrids. The females were usually fertile as were the male kittens in subsequent generations.

By chance, a non-pedigreed shorthaired cat (or "Domestic Shorthair") might resemble an American Shorthair, just as another random-bred cat might look like a Siamese, Persian or Maine Coon.

Later, the breed was renamed domestic shorthair, and in 1965 breeders voted to change the name to the American shorthair.

She started the breed with Elsa, a black domestic shorthair cat, and a blue domestic shorthair whose name we do not have.

In the 1950s British breeders crossed Siamese cats with domestic shorthairs and Russian Blues.

The first Domestic Shorthair to be registered was an imported British Shorthair Red Tabby. This cat was mated in 1904 to a great American cat. The kitten was Smoke and was named Buster Brown. This breed continued to develop for the next 60 years.

The story of the Nebelung breed began in the early 1980s when Cora Cobb, a computer programmer, gave a black domestic shorthair named Elsa to her son as a gift.

Semi-wild Ussuris then hybridised naturally with Siberians and European/Domestic Shorthairs. This hybrid origin is based on conjecture and their appearance. The breed is rare even in its native Russia.

The Bengal is a relatively new breed, descended from a cross between wild Asian Leopard Cats and domestic shorthairs. It is a large spotted cat with a short, glossy coat.

The Oriental Shorthair was developed in the 1950s from crosses between the Siamese, domestic shorthair and the Abyssinian .
