The foundation for both American and European Burmese was a dark walnut colored female from Burma named "Wong Mau." In 1930 a female cat named Wong Mau was brought to San Fransisco, USA by a naval doctor Joseph C.

One group favors the European Burmese, longer, narrower muzzles with a less pronounced nose break and a slightly narrower head.

The breed can be broadly divided into two types: European Burmese and contemporary Burmese.

The Shaded, or Burmilla, is the original Asian variety and originated in Britain in 1981, from an accidental mating of a female Lilac European Burmese (Bambino Lilac Faberge), and a male Chinchilla Silver Persian (Jemari Sanquist).

Most cat registries do not recognise a split between the two groups, but those that do formally refer to the type developed by British cat breeders as the European Burmese[1].
