European Shorthair Cat Origin
European Shorthair is a recently recognized breed of cats that was created to distinguish the Scandinavian cats of Europe from those of United Kingdom. The term European shorthaired cat sometimes brings confusion.

European shorthair is a breed of short-haired cat originating in Sweden. It's one of the oldest and most common breeds, but it wasn't standardized until quite late and is currently only recognized by one major cat club.

The European Shorthair is the Continental European equivalent to the British Shorthair in Great Britain and the American Shorthair in the United States.

The American Shorthair Cat, which was called the Domestic Shorthair until 1960’s, originated from the European Shorthair cat. Its ancestors were probably cats brought into North America by the first settlers.

The Brit's progenitor was a common street cat once called the European Shorthair. This breed (whose conformation is much different from the Brits you'll see in show halls today) came to Great Britain some 2,000 years ago, courtesy of the Roman Empire.

Similar and related to European Shorthair. Described as "potato body on matchstick legs". Short blue coat with heavy undercoat, some "wooliness" permitted.

British shorthair and European shorthairs developed the shorthair type Oriental cats. Since that time only Siamese have been crossbreed with the Orientals. In 1977 the Oriental were granted championship status and became very popular.

The New Zealand SH and LH can now also become breeds in their own right, just as their Northern Hemisphere counterparts have in the American Shorthair and European Shorthair.

Coon, British Short and Longhair, Oriental Shorthair, Tonkinese, Cornish Rex, American Bobtail, Cymric, Devon Rex, Scottish Fold, American Short and Longhair, American Wirehair, Exotic Shorthair, Sphynx, American Curl, and the European Shorthair.

Great Britain no longer allows outcrosses to Persians, but other countries allow the use not only of Persians but also of American Shorthairs, Russian Blues, Chartreux and European Shorthairs, which makes these cats ineligible in CFA.
