Hyperglycemia: Higher than normal blood glucose level. Hypoglycemia: Lower than normal blood glucose level.
Hyperglycemia: The presence of an abnormally high concentration of glucose in the blood. Hypoglycemia: An abnormally low level of glucose in the blood. Hysterectomy: Surgical removal of part or all of the uterus.
Affected cats should normally not be fed exclusively soft, semi-moist food diets, because they contain ingredients that can contribute to hyperglycemia, which exacerbates the effects of diabetes.
However, the diagnosis can sometimes be complicated by hyperglycemia resulting from stress.
When this happens, the blood sugar level remains too high, a condition defined as hyperglycemia. A cat’s body responds to high blood sugar in several ways.
Clinicopathologic findings may include azotemia, hyperphosphatemia, hyperglycemia, hyperkalemia, and signs of urinary tract inflammation on urinalysis.
