Lactose Intolerance in Cats: An Overview

Some pets cannot tolerate milk because they do not produce an enzyme called lactase. Lactase helps with the digestion of lactose, which is found in milk.
Lactose intolerance is a common form of maldigestion. Young animals have the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the sugar in milk called lactose. Often, as animals age, they stop producing lactase.
Cat of any age, breed or gender can be affected. Lactose intolerance is commonly diagnosed in adult cats. Siamese and Siamese cross cats are found to be at higher risk of food sensitivities.

This can be treated with oral supplements. As with other Oriental breeds, lactose intolerance is common and milk should be avoided. Burmese will wander if allowed and as a result, many are hit by cars.
oats, canned pumpkin, cooked rice, cooked pasta or cooked mashed potato into tinned food will add roughage. Some older cats also enjoy warm porridge or hot oat cereal on cold mornings, but this is not suitable for cats with lactose intolerance.
