The queen should be allowed easy access to food, water, and a litter box. Place everything she needs close by, but out of reach of the kittens. Monitor that she is eating, drinking, and using the litter box.

Queens are induced ovulators. This means that after a few breedings the heat phase will be shorter as eggs will be released from the ovary in response to a hormone surge triggered by breeding.

There is a legend that says the Maine Coon is desdenced from Marie Antoinette’s Angora cats, smuggled into America by Captain Clough in attempt to save the queen’s belongings and later the Queen herself.

There are historical claims that Queen Victoria and the royal family had Persian cats. The Persian variant was promoted in England in the 1880's, and the first known Persian is preserved at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London.
A queen in heat is said to be "calling" and will be noisy and restless, often squirming and rolling about on the floor. Toms, on the other hand, may roam, get into fights and spray the house with urine. Not much fun.

Currently (November, 2005), there are approximately twelve breeders with mature queens along with female kittens waiting to join the breeding programme.
The females (queens) mature rapidly and are mature around 7 months. These females are usually very attentive mothers. The Birman Cat has a litter with an average of three kittens.
