There are many rumours regarding the history of the Ragdoll cat. It is believed that the breed started in the 1960's, and was begun by a lady named Ann Baker, a breeder of Persian's.

Ann Baker formed the International Ragdoll Cat Association, Inc. (IRCA) in 1971 to protect the breed.

Thus it came to pass that in 1971 Baker founded her own cat registry, the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA), to "authenticate" ragdoll kittens produced by breeders who were still on her wave length.

Ragdoll cats are also very affectionate towards humans that they come into contact with. When a Ragdoll cat is picked up its body will usually go completely limp which is where they pick up the name "Ragdoll".

She set up her own registry, the International Ragdoll Cat Association, and required all her breeders to register only with her. Baker patented the name Ragdoll for use only with cats of her breeding and registry.

All Ragdoll cats are descended from Baker's cats. By selecting individuals with the look and temperament she wanted for her breeding program, Baker created the standard Ragdoll type.
