This new curly breed was first discovered in the USA in 1987. A worker in an animal shelter noticed a cat with a unique curly coat and gave her to a Persian breeder named Jeri Newman.

The Selkirk Rex was developed from a natural mutation that arose in the United States in a litter of domestic kittens born in 1987. Selkirk Rex of today trace their ancestry back to Miss DePesto, a dilute tortie and white.

The Selkirk Rex, the third Rex cat to appear on the North American show bench, is markedly different from the two Rex breeds that preceded it - the Cornish Rex and the Devon Rex. Both the Cornish and the Devon are fine boned and svelte-bodied.

General: The Selkirk Rex is the result of a dominant, spontaneous mutation that causes each hair (guard, down & awn) to have a gentle wave or curl giving the coat a soft feel.

The Selkirk Rex is a medium to large cat with good balance between legs and body. Heavy boning gives the cat surprising weight and it should be well balanced with good muscle tone and excellent health.

Selkirk Rex's are very friendly and love the company of people and other pets. They are not overly active or energetic and are not know to be destructive. This is certainly a unique cat, which is currently quite rare in Australia.

One of the main features of the Traditional Selkirk Rex is its curly coat. Unlike the other Rex breeds, the Devon and Cornish, who's coats are governed by recessives genes, the Traditional Selkirk Rex's gene is dominant.

The Selkirk Rex comes in both long and short hair varieties. Both types have pronounced curly hair. The appearance is soft and plush. The most notable place to find the curly hair is on the flanks, tummy and neck of the cat.

It is the oldest of the Rex breeds, the others being the Devon Rex and the Selkirk Rex. Despite its resemblance to ancient Egyptian statues, this mutation and the development of the breed, took place in England, in Bodmin Moor, Cornwall.
