It is a widly held misconception that cats are sneaky, shy, or aloof animals. Most feline shyness/aggression is a result of abuse, neglect, or poor socialization.

Early socialization
How and when the kitten was handled from birth has a tremendous impact on the development of the kitten.

It tends to be the Egyptian Mau's nature to be fearful and gun shy, hiding under furniture when company arrives; breeders must take great strives to over compensate for this with a lot of early, hands on socialization during kitten-hood.

Otherwise, they can get bored and will be more reserved cats without lots of socialization, just like many other very intelligent breeds.

The Japanese Bobtail is very playful and (subject to good socialization) get along with other cats, dogs and children in the household.
"..they go with the flow.." 1 They are active and high energy cats. Toys are going to de rigeur then.

A cat's behavior towards humans depends to a certain extent on the kind of first contact a cat has with humans, but also on the cat's personality. Socialization is very important for kittens to become well-balanced companions as adult cats.

In general and to avoid other possible socialization problems a kitten should remain with its mother and littermates until at least 12 weeks of age. Any breeder willing to sell a kitten before that age is probably not a reputable one.
