Spotting: A term referring to the white patches on the coat.
Spray: Behavior of a cat (typically male) who emits a stream or spray of urine to mark its territory.

White Spotting Gene
As I understand it the white spotting gene causes the bicolor pattern through its interaction with a recessive allele (see below) of the agouti gene.

White spotting

The white patches, caused by the Piebald Spotting gene, are called white spotting.

White Spotting - Refers to the presence of small white areas on an otherwise Solid-coloured cat.

Blue spotting on a pale blue or buff agouti ground.
Nose leather

White spotting; barring on tail; top of head unticked; unbroken necklaces or leg bracelets; very small eyes or ears; visible tail faults; blue eyes.
None.

Any dark spotting on white mittens, lack of white stripe running down underside to base of tail.
Bicolor:
Color patches on stomach or area designated white.

PIE BALD WHITE SPOTTING GENE - Prevents migration of pigment cells, prevents formation of pigment in areas on the cat, thus forming areas of white surrounding pigment. The gene causes premature melanocyte death.

All the colours are clear and the spotting neither blurred nor faint. The face and stomach will be paler than the rest of the body and the darkest part of the cat will be the tip of the tail.

These cats are mixed-breed, as significant white spotting is not found in the Siamese breed (although some small bits like a little white spot on the toes is found; this is considered a disqualification for showing).

How is it that the Ocicat, a breed with well-placed leopard-like spots, was produced by breeding together two breeds conspicuously without such spotting? Well, it's simple, no one knows.

One of the most noticeable differences is the breed's spotting requirement.

If the Birman male used was a purebred, he could have produced a Traditional Ragdoll if Josephine was carrying a white spotting gene and a pointed gene. This same "if" applies to the White Persian female, if that was what Josephine was.

Burmese contributed the loving personality, four of the colours and some spotting as well as body size. From the Abyssinians came the beautiful ticking to develop the spots, two more colours, and a touch of lively Intelligence.

Early generations have some form of dark spotting on a lighter coat, and many breeders employ "wild"-looking spotted breeds such as the Bengal and Egyptian Mau for the cross to preserve these markings in later generations.

The spotting pattern is distinctly different from the other four spotted breeds: the Egyptian mau, Bengal, California spangled and pixie bob.

The coat must be striped with no spotting. The ears small and rounded, good solid bone structure and overall balance.

The colorpoint and white spotting genes interact to produce the different patterns. The three recognized patterns for Ragdolls are colorpoint, mitted and bicolor. All Ragdolls are colorpointed and some also have white.

Bi-color cats are an expression of the piebald spotting gene and this gene had, and continues to have, a high distribution in the eastern feline populations.

Pixie had muted spotting on a reddish-fawn coat and an especially wild look. By 1987, Carol Ann had realized that these bobtailed domestic cats were extraordinarily unique, and she began looking for more cats with a similar look.

Good clear spotting is essential. Spots may be round, oblong or irregularly shaped. The spots, however shaped or placed, must be distinct and not running into each other and must be identical on both sides. Rings on tail may be broken or unbroken.

The unique combination of pointed pattern, white spotting and moderated body type sets the Snowshoe apart from other breeds.

As breeding has progressed, the marbled type has appeared. Rather than spotting, marble-like swirls are apparent through the coat.

The ideal Bengal is domestic in personality, but displays the wild cat's pattern of rosetted spotting and the pelted look. The traditional Bengal color is brown tabby--black, brown or rust color in clear contrast to a tan or orange background.

Tabby/non-solid patterns, preferred pattern is black with white "teardrop" on the forehead and white spotting on the top of the tail, sometimes forming a skunk-like stripe. Slow to mature.

The stripes are actually long rosettes/braids and should not be uniform like a mackerel pattern but more like long random individual stripes. The coat must be striped with no spotting.

Body large and heavy and may exhibit a fatty pad on lower abdomen. The Ragdoll coat pattern expresses Himalayan points and white spotting. Reputed to be insensitive to pain, which is fallacious, it displays a docile and quiet temperament.

She was covered with muted spotting on her reddish-fawn coat and had a very wild face, reminiscent of a Bobcat. Pixie then became the dam line for most of the females in the program, and also became the namesake for the breed.

Sudgen had an actual interest in breeding Asian leopard hybrids, she chose not to take all of the cats, instead focusing on those cats that were showing a predilection for domestic temperament along with the desired spotting patterns.

Patterns may vary with white spotting. Regardless of specific markings, this is a most striking looking animal. The broad, triangular head has an inverted, white "V" extending from the forehead to the muzzle.

Cats with blue eyes (with the exception of those with "Turner blue eyes") have a higher incidence of deafness than those with coloured eyes. White cats carrying the white spotting gene may have an increased risk factor and white cats which had large ...

The coat pattern of the Pixie Bob is also similar to the bobcat, possessing random spotting with rosettes and broken bars, which are often muted with heavy ticking.
