Thai "lucky" breed with silver-tipped blue fur, modified oriental build and distinctive heart-shaped face which differentiates it from Russian Blue and Foreign Blue Shorthair. Also called Si-Sawat or Royal Cat.

Thanks to the Thai people of early Siam, (Now Thailand), there is recorded history of solid brown cats in "The Cat Book Poems" dating back to between 1300 and 1767.

She was the family pet of an official at the Thai Embassy, who brought her to Australia with him. We exchanged a Russian Blue for this beautiful white cat, and mated her to one of our Russian Blue studs.

In 1959 she was finally given a pair of Korats by the Thai government. The pair, Nara and Darra, became America?s foundation Korats. To avoid inbreeding, Johnson crossbred Nara and Darra to Siamese cats that she had also brought back from Thailand.

Highly prized in their country of origin, Korats often were (and are) given in pairs as a traditional Thai wedding gift. They are believed to bring longevity, health, good fortune and happiness to the newlyweds.

The Korat has held its cherished place in Thai culture as a prosperity, health, and good luck charm.

There should be no shading or tabby markings in order to be show quality. Colors that may occasional occur from a recessive dilute genes are lilac. blue point or lilac point and these cats are called Thai Pointed variations or Thai Lilac.

The breed is named after the Gulf of Tonkin, which is close to Burmese and Siamese (Thai) territories, but does not belong to either, just like the Tonkinese breed.

TICA recognizes fifty-five breeds of cats for championship competition - from the regal Siamese, exotic Bengal and exquisite Persian, to newer breeds including the Savannah, Kurilian Bobtail and Thai.
